Three ways to split a PDF

MethodWhat you getExample
Extract selected pagesOne new PDF with only the pages you clickSend pages 3 and 7 of a contract to a colleague
Split by page rangesOne PDF per range, or one combined PDFSeparate chapters: 1-12, 13-30, 31-45
Every page separatelyOne PDF per page, packed in a ZIP fileSplit a batch of scanned invoices

Writing page ranges

Page ranges use page numbers as they appear in the thumbnails, starting from 1. Separate ranges with commas:

  • 5 creates a file with page 5 only.
  • 1-3 creates a file with pages 1, 2 and 3.
  • 1-3, 5, 8-10 creates three files.
  • 10-8 creates a file with pages 10, 9 and 8, in reverse order.

Tick Combine ranges into one file to get a single PDF containing all the listed pages instead of separate files. If a range is outside the document, the tool tells you which part to fix.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the PDF. Thumbnails of every page appear.
  2. Choose a split method.
  3. Click the pages to extract, type the page ranges, or keep Every page selected.
  4. Select Split PDF and download a single PDF or a ZIP file.

Practical uses

  • Reduce an attachment to the pages that matter before emailing it.
  • Separate a scanned stack of documents into individual files.
  • Share one chapter of a textbook or report for class or review.
  • Remove blank or duplicate pages by extracting all the other pages.

Tips for clean results

Before splitting a long document, scroll through the thumbnails once. Blank pages from double-sided scanning, cover sheets and duplicate pages are easy to spot and can be left out at the same time. If you need pages in a different order, choose Split by page ranges, type them in the order you want, for example 4, 1-3, and tick Combine ranges into one file. You can also rearrange pages afterwards in the PDF Editor.

When you split every page into a separate file, the ZIP keeps them in the original order because each file name includes its page number with leading zeros, such as page-007. That makes them sort correctly in any file manager.

Splitting copies pages exactly, so it never makes a PDF blurry. If the pages are large scans and you need smaller files, convert them to images, compress them, and rebuild the PDF with Image to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get several files?

When the result is more than one PDF, the files are packed into a single ZIP file for download.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Encrypted PDFs cannot be rewritten in the browser. Print the file to a new PDF with "Save as PDF" in a PDF reader, then split that copy.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is split in your browser.

Does splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, with their original text and images.

How are the files named?

Each file is named after the original PDF and the pages it contains, for example report-pages-01-03.pdf, so they sort in the right order.
