Which conversion do you need

  • WEBP to JPG: a website saved an image as WEBP and a form, printer or older program will not open it.
  • PNG to JPG: a screenshot or exported graphic is too large to email or upload.
  • JPG to PNG: you need to edit a photo several times without adding compression each time.
  • JPG or PNG to WEBP: you are publishing images on your own website and want faster loading.

Step-by-step

  1. Open your image. The tool picks a different format from the original as the target.
  2. Choose JPG, PNG or WEBP.
  3. For JPG and WEBP, set the quality. 85 is a good default.
  4. If the image has transparent areas and you are converting to JPG, choose the background color.
  5. Select Convert image and download.

Transparency and backgrounds

PNG and WEBP can contain transparent areas, such as the space around a logo. JPG cannot, so those areas must be filled with a color. White suits most documents and websites; choose your page or brand color if the image will appear on a colored background. Converting a JPG to PNG does not create transparency by itself. To cut out a subject, use the Background Remover.

Converting does not improve quality

Changing the format of a low-quality JPG to PNG makes the file bigger but does not restore detail that compression already removed. Always convert from the best original you have.

Quality settings when converting

When converting to JPG or WEBP, the quality slider decides the balance between file size and detail. A setting of 85 is a sensible default that looks identical to the original for most photos. Use 90 to 95 for images you will print or edit again, and 70 to 80 for web pages and messaging. When converting to PNG, quality does not apply, because PNG is always lossless.

If you convert a photo from WEBP to JPG to upload it to a form, check the form's size limit afterwards. JPG files are often a little larger than the WEBP original, and the Compress Image tool can bring the size down again.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose in the settings, which is white by default.

Which format gives the smallest file?

For most photos, WEBP produces the smallest file at a similar visual quality, followed by JPG. PNG is usually the largest for photos but can be the smallest for simple graphics with few colors.

Can every browser create WEBP files?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can. If your browser cannot encode WEBP, the tool tells you instead of saving a file in the wrong format.

Can I convert HEIC, GIF or SVG files?

The tool accepts JPG, PNG and WEBP. Other formats are not supported because browsers handle them inconsistently.

How do I open a WEBP image on Windows?

Current versions of Windows Photos open WEBP files. If a program cannot, convert the file to JPG or PNG here.

Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, which takes much more space for photos. That is normal.
