How to use Background Remover
- Upload a JPG, PNG or WEBP photo.
- Choose Person for portraits, or Object and click the subject you want to keep.
- Use the Erase and Restore brushes to correct any areas the AI missed.
- Choose a transparent, color or blurred background and download.
What this tool is for
Removing a background used to mean careful work with selection tools in desktop software. This tool uses AI models to do most of that work automatically, directly in your browser. The result is a cut-out of the subject that you can download as a transparent PNG, place on a solid color, or keep in front of a softly blurred version of the original background.
Typical uses include product photos for online shops and social media marketplaces, profile pictures, ID and application photos that need a plain background, presentation slides, and graphics for posters and banners.
Person mode and Object mode
| Person mode | Object mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Portraits, selfies, group photos, ID photos | Products, pets, vehicles, food, furniture |
| How it works | Finds people automatically, including hair and clothing | You click the object to keep; click again to add missing parts |
| Model download | About 16 MB, once | About 6 MB, once |
| Tip | Works best when the whole head and shoulders are visible | Click near the center of the object, not its edge |
If Person mode finds nobody, for example in a photo of a shoe, the tool tells you and suggests switching to Object mode.
Step-by-step
- Choose a photo. JPG, PNG and WEBP files are supported, up to 25 MB.
- In Person mode, wait a moment while the background is removed. In Object mode, click the subject. Each additional click on a missing part adds it to the selection.
- Check the edges. Hold Compare to see the original, and zoom out to judge the overall shape.
- Correct mistakes with the brushes. Erase removes areas that should be background; Restore brings back parts of the subject that were removed.
- Adjust Edge softness. Use a low value for hard-edged products and a higher value for hair and fur.
- Pick a background: transparent, a color, or a blurred version of the original. Then download.
Getting clean edges
AI segmentation is very good at large shapes and less certain about fine details. You will get the cleanest result when:
- The subject is in sharp focus. Blurry edges are hard to separate from the background.
- There is contrast between subject and background, in color or brightness. A black cat on a dark sofa is hard; a black cat on a light floor is easy.
- The photo has enough resolution. A product photographed to fill the frame gives better edges than one that is small in the corner.
- Lighting is even. Strong shadows on the floor are sometimes treated as part of the object and need a quick pass with the Erase brush.
For hair, a little edge softness (around 3 to 5) usually looks more natural than a perfectly hard outline. For boxes, phones and other products with straight edges, set it to 0 or 1.
Product photos for online selling
Marketplaces and shop themes often look better with all products on the same plain background. A quick routine for a set of product photos:
- Photograph each product on a plain surface in daylight, with the camera at the same height and distance.
- Remove the background in Object mode by clicking the product.
- Choose white or a light grey background so every photo matches.
- Download as JPG for the smallest files, or PNG if you will place products on different backgrounds later.
Which file format to download
Choose PNG when you need transparency, for example to place the subject on a website, in a design or on top of another photo. WEBP also supports transparency and creates smaller files, but some older programs cannot open it. JPG does not support transparency, so it is only available with a color or blurred background, and it gives the smallest file size.
Privacy
Unlike most online background removers, this tool does not send your photo to a server. The AI models are downloaded to your browser and run on your own device. That makes it suitable for personal photos and photos of documents or customers that you would rather not upload.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The AI models run in your browser. They are downloaded to your device the first time you use each mode (about 16 MB for Person, 6 MB for Object) and your image never leaves your device.
Why is it slow on my phone?
The AI model needs memory and processing power. On older phones the first run can take several seconds. Large photos are processed at a reduced size for detection and the mask is then scaled to full resolution.
Can I remove the background from several images at once?
Not at the moment. Each image is processed separately so you can check and refine the result.
Is there a watermark?
No. The downloaded image has no watermark and keeps the full resolution of your original.
Is there a limit on how many photos I can process?
No. There is no daily limit, account or payment. Each photo is processed on your device.
Why do some edges look rough?
Fine details and low-contrast edges are the hardest part of background removal. Use the Erase and Restore brushes for small corrections and increase Edge softness slightly for hair and fur.
Can I remove the background from a logo or signature?
Object mode works for logos with clear shapes. For black signatures on white paper, the result is often cleaner if you also increase contrast first in the Photo Editor.
Does it work offline?
After the page and the AI model have loaded once, processing itself does not need an internet connection.
